Description
This is a 13-hour course lead by an expert in the field of petrology applied to igneous processes (Helene Balcone Boissard, Sorbonne Université) and supported by a physical volcanologist at UNAM (Marie-Noëlle Guilbaud). Key components of the course consist in a presentation of the state of the art of scientific investigation on the dynamics of volcanic systems and the relevance of novel petrological tools such as the diffusive timing of crystals to resolve the timescales of the processes, the exposition of a case study with hand-on session in the laboratory, and an access to updated bibliography on the theme. Theoretical and discussion talks will be in a hybrid format allowing on-line participation. For the practical session, there will be direct access to the laboratory for a limited number of participants, with a video recording sent to all participants.
This workshop is partly funded by the project “Preparing for silicic eruptions in subduction zones: Insights from the petrological study of Las Derrumbadas monogenetic domes” sponsored by the Sorbonne Université through the program: “Chaire d’Excellence UNAM – Sorbonne Université, Appel 2023”.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Update knowledge on advanced petrological tools to address the dynamics of volcanic systems and get a laboratory experience on applying some microanalytical techniques.
- Get in direct contact with an expert in this field to promote future collaborations, in particular (but not exclusively) between UNAM and Sorbonne Université (Paris, France)
TARGET AUDIENCES
Advanced students (master, doctorate, posdoc) and researchers who have background in mineralogy and petrology, as well as an understanding of volcanic systems
Cost

ENTRY REQUIREMENT
- Advanced students (master, doctorate, posdoctorate) and researchers who have background in mineralogy and petrology, as well as an understanding of volcanic systems.
PERMANENCE REQUIREMENT
- Participants are recommended to attend all activities, although those may be facultative if the participant has previous knowledge or is interested only by one part of the activity. Video recordings will be made so that all participants will have access to the material.
REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN THE CERTIFICATE
- Accessible to all participants who have attended all activities and have filled the feed-back form.

MODALITY
Synchronous online
EVALUATION INSTRUMENT
- There will be no formal evaluation but a form to fill-in to get feed-back from participants and allow follow-up.
After-course Profile
Knowledge on the most recent concepts on magma dynamic/plumbing system together with the novel techniques that are used in research in igneous petrology applied to volcanic systems, with the ability to develop the technique in their own research projects.
